Truce of 1914 and other years. The solders and some officers acted on there own initiative and stoped the killing, for as long as they could. They put up Christmas trees and lights. Some even shared small gifts and a drink and sung Christmas songs and hymns. An excellent movie about these events is called Joyeux Noel and well worth watching, click on link for 1m 50s preview
